Call for TORT papers - SLS - Strathclyde - Sept 2005
Below
is a call for papers for the Torts Subject Section at the 2005 Annual
Conference of the Society of Legal Scholars (meeting at the University
of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland).
Some
of those who gave papers at last year's conference in Sheffield
are regular contributors to discussion on this list. Long may the
tradition continue!

Call
for Papers for
TORTS
subject section
SLS
Annual Conference, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, September
2005
Timing
and location:
The
TORTS Subject Section will be meeting at the SLS Annual Conference
at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. The full conference runs
from 2 pm on Tuesday 6th September until 12.45 pm on Friday 9th
September. The University of Strathclyde is in central Glasgow.
Most attendees will be staying in hotels in Glasgow. The SLS Annual
Dinner, on Wednesday 7th September 2005, will be held in Stirling
Castle.
The
TORTS subject section will be meeting during the second half of
the conference: Thursday 8 th September, 11.15 am – 12.45 pm, 4
pm – 5.30 pm; Friday 9 th September 9.15 am – 10.45 am, 11.15 am
– 12.45 pm.
Papers:
The
TORTS subject section uses a format where each 90 minute session
is divided between two papers. Thus paper is allocated 45 minutes
and, ideally, the presenter should aim to spend no more than 25
minutes presenting the paper so as to allow time for discussion.
Ideally, papers should be made available in advance (for instance,
in the form of a draft) so that they can be distributed to delegates
though an electronic paperbank on the SLS website.
Offers
of papers:
If
you would like to present a paper in the TORTS subject section then
please contact the section convenor (roderick.bagshaw@law.ox.ac.uk)
by 1st March 2005. If possible, please provide the title of your
paper, a brief summary of its likely contents, and any information
relevant to the selection criteria (below). Please also indicate
if you are willing to undertake to produce a draft paper by 12th
August 2005 (for distribution through the paperbank on the SLS website).
IMPORTANT
NOTE: presenters of papers must BOOK into and PAY for the SLS Conference
like other delegates. The TORTS subject section does not cover the
registration costs, accommodation costs or travel costs of those
giving papers.
Selection
criteria:
In
the last two years more papers have been offered to the TORTS subject
section than could be fitted into the schedule. In choosing between
offers of papers the convenor intends taking into account (and seeking
to balance!) the following criteria:
-
the desirability of hearing high quality papers
-
the desirability of hearing papers likely to be of significant interest
to a large number of members of the TORTS subject section
-
the desirability of hearing papers which will be available in advance
through the paperbank on the SLS website
-
the desirability of hearing papers from scholars who have not presented
papers to the TORTS subject section in recent years
-
the desirability of hearing papers from postgraduate members and
members who are early in their careers
-
the desirability of being able to put two papers on related topics
together into a single session
-
the desirability of not having overlapping papers
-
the desirability of having a balance between the topics, jurisdictions
and styles of scholarship covered by papers.
Peculiar
personal preferences:
The
convenor would be particularly interested in offers of papers concerning
the ongoing efforts to unify or harmonize tort law across Europe
(through the drafting of common principles, etc).
The
convenor would be particularly interested in offers of papers which
take account of Scots Law.
Further
comments:
Please
feel free to get in contact with me (roderick.bagshaw@law.ox.ac.uk)
if you want to discuss any matters further.
I
look forward to seeing many of you in Glasgow.

Bagshaw
