A Canadian team is in.

However, I object to the salary cap as an unreasonable restraint on the market. We Canadian oligarchs believe one ought to be able to swan in and buy any team at any price.

Moreover, I object to the selection limits. (Mainly because one realises that the selection is not going well when he has too many Swansea players and only £5 to spend on the last midfielder.)

As for name, I might suggest leaving it just as ODG and preserve the anonymity. If it all goes badly and the various team managers show themselves to be incompetent fools, maybe we won’t want anyone to make the connexion?? In the end, you know some web-savvy undergrad (who will be at the top of the national fantasy league table, but failing your course) is eventually going to stumble upon this league and thoroughly embarrass the members.

Thanks to all who have signed up so far and for the excellent suggestions of name. "Geeks" is especially apt, I have to admit. Please keep coming with further suggestions for the rest of today. I suggest that we then let Colm McGrath (who set everything up) make the final decision.

Kick off is only a day away, hurry and sign up today if you'd like to play along. (John...!). We already have teams from Austria, Australia and Singapore as well as the UK.

In the meantime, here are a few more suggestions of name from me (I had a day off to think about it!):

"Obsessives discuss goals"
"Oddly designed goalposts"
"Offside debated gnomically"

And one attempt in what is no doubt badly remembered Latin:
"Omnia debemus Gaio" [we owe everything to Gaius")

Cheers
Ken (aka 'Wiener Tortjäger')

come on North America... we're all supposed to be thinking in terms of tasty tuck and relaxing evening while you guys still have shift to put in.... what do you all say? Or do I detect - because it is football - an attitude of "overseas dons' game" lurking there in the background?

Whether you want to play or not, please don't let Ms Negative (aka Sarah) have the last word, here.

Good Man, Ken!!!!

i'll register, naturally.

But name-wise, are we bound by ODG? Can't we just go with any old name?

If not... Official Distraction (for) Goons would be my way of keeping the ball in motion.

Dear All

I hope Jason will forgive the topic drift, but I would like to let you all know that my colleague, Colm McGrath, has set up an "ODG" fantasy football league on the official English Premier League website. The season's start is just a couple of days away, so if you would like to play just click on the link below, register on the site, and select your team:

http://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-leagues/338180/join/?autojoin-code=815260-338180.

The link will take you directly to the "ODG" league. Registration is quick, easy and free. The biggest challenge is to select your squad of 15 players, and to find a suitable name for them. (No pun too corny to be rejected.)

We are also looking for a rather more exciting name for the league than simply "ODG", so please send in your suggestions if you have any. To get the ball rolling, I will suggest "Old Duffers' Graveyard".

I hope some of you will be persuaded to play along - if you are, then please remember to enter your team before the big kick-off.

Best wishes
Ken
