Applications are invited from scholars working in the field of private law for the Lord President Reid Chair of Law which becomes vacant on the retirement of Professor George Gretton in July 2016. 

The University of Edinburgh School of Law is based at Old College in the heart of the city. With over 90 full-time members of staff and a vibrant body of undergraduate and postgraduate students, it is home to a number of prestigious institutes and centres. Since 1722, when the first chair in private law was established, the Edinburgh Law School has been a leading centre for the study of the private law, and has placed particular emphasis on comparative and historical methodologies. 

The University seeks to appoint a world-leading scholar working in any area of private law and from any jurisdiction. As well as providing leadership in research and teaching in and beyond the private law subject area, he or she will contribute to undergraduate teaching in Scottish private law, the LLM in Comparative and European Private Law, and the supervision of research students. There is an expectation that all colleagues within the School will also contribute to the delivery of online and/or distance learning teaching and supervision.

The successful candidate will be expected to take up the appointment in the course of 2017.

This is a full time, open-ended post.

Salary: on the Professorial scale, Grade UE10.

1. Job Details

2. Job Purpose

To teach private law at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to undertake writing and research, to provide academic leadership in the field of private law, and to contribute to the Law School’s academic administration and management. 

3. Main Responsibilities

1. Deliver research-led teaching in private law at undergraduate level and at masters level including the LLM in Comparative and European Private Law including delivery of both on-campus and, where appropriate, online distance learning. 

2. Supervise doctoral students, and develop Edinburgh’s reputation as a centre for postgraduate research in private law. 

3. Engage in world leading writing and research in the field of private law.

4. Provide research leadership by mentoring early career colleagues, organising conferences and workshops, fostering research links with other jurisdictions, and winning external research funding. 

5. Contribute to the activities of the Edinburgh Centre for Private Law and, through the Centre and by other means, enhance the position of the Edinburgh Law School as an acknowledged leader in the field of private law. 

6. Lead and manage a team of colleagues within the Private-Law Subject Area and contribute to academic leadership and management across the Law School. 

7. Foster and sustain productive relationships with external partners and collaborators in the legal profession, policy communities and private sector in and beyond Scotland 

4. Planning and Organising

• Lead Subject Area teaching, assessment and research planning on an annual basis

• Develop longer term (three to ten years) strategic plans for the sustainability, growth and development of the Subject Area including exploration of development of potential online courses and CPD offerings. 

• Explore the scope for collaboration and exchange between colleagues in the private law subject area and those a) in other parts of the School of Law and b) beyond the School

• Participate in the strategic planning discussions for the School as a whole 

• By agreement and at an appropriate time undertake a position of leadership responsibility on behalf of the School

• Represent the School in wider University forums as required

5. Problem Solving 

• Address the distribution of workloads between colleagues within the subject area in order to fulfil its obligations in respect of teaching, supervision and assessment at all levels whilst protecting adequate time for research on the part of all relevant colleagues

6. Decision Making

• Deciding allocations of supervision and marking within the Subject Area

7. Key Contacts/Relationships 

• Work in collaboration and cooperation with senior office bearers including the Head of School, Director of Research, Director of Learning and Teaching and Director of Professional Services to develop private law at Edinburgh

• Engage with the academic legal community in Scotland, in the rest of the UK, and beyond, by giving lectures and papers, by developing research-informed CPD and knowledge exchange activities and by other means.

8. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job

Qualifications/Training

Essential

An outstanding academic profile, with a PhD or equivalent.

An established track-record of internationally-excellent research in any field of private law.

Desirable

A recognized qualification in learning and teaching in higher education

Experience

Essential

Extensive experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Experience of mentoring and developing colleagues at various career stages

An interest in aspects of Scottish private law, or a willingness to acquire such an interest.

An interest in comparative law.

Desirable

Any or several of:

• Research interest in Scottish private law;

• Research interest in the private law of a jurisdiction other than Scotland;

• Research interest in mixed legal systems;

• Research interest in comparative law; and

• Research interest in legal history.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

Essential

Proven ability to lead and motivate people, to manage resources, and to contribute to the running of the Law School.

Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
