Subject: ODG/RDG: Downing Professorship of the Laws of England

Dear Colleagues,

Many congratulations to out to ODGer and RDG list convenor Lionel Smith who has been elected to the Downing Professorship of the Laws of England at Cambridge.  He will take up the position in October 2022:

Lionel follows in the footsteps of a number of distinguished holders of the professorship, including Dame Sarah Worthington, Gareth Jones, Sir John Baker, and FW Maitland.  Commenting on Professor Smith’s appointment, Professor Mark Elliott, Chair of the Faculty of Law, said: "I am delighted that Professor Smith will be joining the Faculty of Law as our new Downing Professor of the Laws of England. An outstanding researcher, teacher and academic leader, Professor Smith will be an enormous asset to the Faculty; we look forward very much to welcoming him to Cambridge and to working with him."

Canada’s loss is England’s gain.
