Subject: [RDG] Take the Money and Run
Some
members might have seen news of an interesting case from Denmark. An artist, Jens Haaning,
was commissioned by the Kunsten Museum in Aalborg to produce two works of art
showing, respectively, an average Danish and Austrian annual income in actual
bank notes. The museum provided him with about EUR72,000 intending to recover
the notes when the exhibition was over. The artist delivered two blank
canvasses entitled “Take the Money and Run”. He was reported as saying (translation by google):
“No, it's not theft. It is a breach of contract, and breach of contract is part
of the work.” Last month a court in Denmark ordered him to repay most but not
all of the money (about EUR66,000), holding that he was entitled to retain his
expenses and a fee that presumably had been agreed.
