Lionel Smith
"Peter Birks Memorial Fund
On 6 July 2004, Professor Peter Birks died of cancer
at the age of 62. All those interested in the Law of Restitution will
be well aware that Peter was one of the leading academic lawyers of the
20th century and that his writings on the Law of Restitution and Unjust
Enrichment have had a particularly profound impact.
The Oxford Law Faculty has decided to mark his outstanding
contribution to its work and reputation by creating the Peter Birks Memorial
Fund. The aim of this fund is to support the following two initiatives
in the Law Faculty:
- The establishment of a Peter Birks Lecturership. For
a five-year post, one would need to raise £300,000. To endow a post,
one would need to raise £1,800,000.
- The establishment of an endowed graduate scholarship
for the BCL/MJur/DPhil in his name, ensuring an annual Peter Birks Graduate
Scholarship of £5,000. For this, one would need to secure an endowment
of £125,000.
For those who would like to make a donation, a pledge
form is attached, complete with Gift Aid information.
Should you want any further information or to discuss
this further, please contact either Professor Andrew Burrows (andrew.burrows@law.ox.ac.uk)
or Professor Ewan McKendrick (ewan.mckendrick@law.ox.ac.uk)
or Maureen O’Neill (Maureen.oneill@law.ox.ac.uk),
the Law Faculty’s Director of Development."
