Subject: Conferences in Vienna
Dear All
As many on this list already know, I have recently moved to Vienna, where I shall take up the post of Director of the (re-named) Institute for European Tort Law on 1 January 2009, in succession to Prof. Helmut Koziol.
I would kindly draw to your attention the Institute's forthcoming conference on the topic of Punitive Damages. The conference will be held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences on Monday 17 November. It will include contributions from jurisdictions that openly endorse punitive damages (England, South Africa and the United States), as well as those which vehemently deny their existence, although some of them covertly incorporate punitive damages into the framework of their tort systems (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary, the Scandinavian countries, and the EU). The conference will include a report on punitive damages from a Law and Economics perspective and will also touch on the controversies surrounding the insurability of such damages. The conference chairman will be Sir Henry Brooke, formerly a Lord Justice of Appeal and Chairman of the Law Commission for England and Wales. The conference registration fee is € 30 (free to students). Please register your interest in attending the Conference with lisa.zeiler@oeaw.ac.at.
A date for your diaries: list members may also want to note the dates of next year's Annual Conference on European Tort Law, which will be held in Vienna from the 16th to 18th April 2009. Further information will be posted in due course on the Institute's website (www.etl.oeaw.ac.at) and the webpages of its partner institution, the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law (www.ectil.org).
I look forward to welcoming list members to Vienna in the near future!
Best wishes
Ken
